The Astronomy Festival is one of the most exciting and busy events and weekends at Great Basin National Park. 

This free, three-day event is always a stellar experience! Enjoy ranger talks, solar telescope viewing, guest presentations, astrophotography workshops, Art in the Dark, tours of the Great Basin Observatory, and evenings spent under the stars with dozens of telescopes set up near the astronomy amphitheater. With so much to see and do, you’re sure to have an experience that’s truly out of this world.

The event is very popular, and lodging and campsites can be hard to come by. If you can’t make it this year - start planning for next year - the festival is typically held Thursday through Saturday during the new moon in September.

10th Annual Race the Rails 10th Annual Race the Rails The steam locomotive and the bicycle were invented nearly 10 years apart. Both changed the way we travel, but which will prevail on September 12th at the 10th Annual Race the Rails?!At the sound of the train whistle, mountain and road bikers race to see who can get back to the depot before the train.Mountain bikers and gravel grinders test their speed and agility on a challenging 10-mile course through the beautiful mountains surrounding Ely. Road bikers prove their speed and endurance on a 25-mile course along roads and highway sin the area. Everyone who finishes the course will receive a finishers medal.This is not a regular race against time, or your fellow riders.
