Grab your friends and family and join the Ely Elks Lodge #1469 for one of Ely’s most loved traditions - the Annual Crab Crack! This fun, laid-back evening is all about good food, great company, and enjoying crab the way it’s meant to be eaten… with your hands! 😜

This event serves 500 pounds of crab that is shipped to Ocean Beauty Distributors in Salt Lake from Fisheries in Astoria, Oregon. Volunteers from the lodge drive to Salt Lake to pick up the frozen crab on Wednesday before the event. The crab is thawed and served at just the right temperature. Along with the crab, 60 pounds of coleslaw and 50 loaves of garlic bread, cocktail sauce and 39 pounds of melted butter is also served with dinner!

Whether you’re cracking shells with friends, sharing laughs with family, this event is a favorite for a reason, it’s a true community gathering around the table!

And gain a behind-the-scenes understanding of how Park leadership helped navigate the challenges and opportunities at Great Basin National Park throughout the years.Register to Join Us! Our Panelists Rebecca Mills, Superintendent at Great Basin National Park from 1995-2002.Rebecca’s dream came true when she became Superintendent of Great Basin National Park. During her time at the Park, Rebecca helped Bonnie Bryan launch the Great Basin National Park Foundation and after her retirement from the NPS, she joined the Foundation Board of Directors. Earlier in Becky’s career she oversaw youth employment and equal opportunity programs for the National Park Service Western Region. Becky grew up hiking and camping with family and Girl Scouts then worked as a community organizer, social worker, and non-profit director before joining the National Park Service.Steve Mietz, Superintendent at Great Basin National Park from 2013-2017. Steve served more than two decades of leadership and natural and cultural resources management in the National Park Service  - at Point Reyes National Seashore, Grand Canyon National Park, Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Great Basin National Park, and multiple regional directorships around the American West. Throughout his public service career, Steve forged innovative, sustainable programs and partnerships, especially in connection with tribal groups. Mietz was named Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship by the National Park Service in 2022. Steve currently serves as the President and CEO of Save the Redwoods League.        James Woolsey, Superintendent at Great Basin National Park from 2018-2023.James’s leadership at Great Basin was shaped by a long career in national parks and public lands, where he specialized in interpretation, visitor experience, and resource stewardship. Before joining Great Basin, James held key positions at Springfield Armory, Coltsville National Historical Park, Death Valley, and Acadia. His work also extended internationally, where he directed visitor services at the Normandy American Cemetery and later supported operations at U.S. military cemeteries overseas. Since retiring in 2023, James and his wife, Elizabeth, have remained deeply connected to the Great Basin community. They continue to call Baker, Nevada home, where they operate the Bristlecone General Store and the Stargazer Inn - continuing their commitment to welcoming visitors to the region.ModeratorBrandi Roberts, Executive Director of the Great Basin Heritage Area Partnership (GBHAP).Brandi leads regional efforts to preserve and share the rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage of the Great Basin. Her work supports communities across the Heritage Area through grantmaking, educational programs, and collaborative projects that highlight the region’s unique landscape and traditions. Brandi worked at Great Basin National Park as a lead interpreter from 2001 to 2013. White Pine County NEEDS SURVEY White Pine County NEEDS SURVEY This Extension has launched a survey to assess needs in 14 northern Nevada counties, and is asking citizens to go online to participate before January 31st.  If you’ve ever got advice on caring for your landscape from a Master Gardener, enrolled your child in a 4-H Youth Development Program, or picked up a Living With Fire handout on how to prepare your home for the threat of wildfire, you’ve interacted with the White Pine Extension unit of the University of Nevada, Reno . The University is currently engaged in communities across the state, presenting research-based knowledge to address critical community needs. go online to participate by Jan. 31.“We really want to hear from our stakeholders, whether it’s families, teachers, businesses or local officials,” said Abbey Pike, Extension’s coordinator in Washoe County. “Needs and challenges are constantly changing and evolving. This is an opportunity for everyone to have their voices heard, and for us to step back and take a look at what our priority areas of programming should be over the next several years.”Extension is unique in that it is a county-state-federal partnership with offices and programs throughout the state charged with providing needs-based, practical education to people, businesses and communities. It’s housed in the University’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources, as many of its programming areas overlap with that college’s areas of focus. Extension’s programming spans the fields of agriculture and horticulture, health and nutrition, natural resources, personal and family development, and community development.For this particular survey, Extension is focused on obtaining input from residents in northern Nevada counties, including Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, Washoe and White Pine. Participants will have the chance to enter a drawing for one of the available $50 gift cards in each county.Pike says Extension county leaders will analyze the survey responses, interview key stakeholders and review previous evaluations to determine the most urgent needs in each county. These findings will help guide Extension’s efforts to deliver programs that can have the most impact to strengthen Nevada communities.
