Almost 60 miles west of Ely is a fully operational gold mine, known as the Pan Mine, which is now owned by Calibre Mining. The precious element was discovered in this area in 1978 by Mr. Lyle Campbell, who staked 147 original unpatented mining claims. These claims were transferred to the LFC Trust in 1986. Over the next several years, numerous claims were added and released from the Pan claim block. In 1998, Mr. Campbell passed away, but the property continued to be managed by the LFC Trust until 2008. In 2007, Midway Gold Corporation acquired the mine and added unpatented claims to the land. In 2016, GRP acquired the assets and mineral leases from Midway. GRP quickly merged with Fiore Gold.

In 2022 Fiore Gold was purchased by Calibre Mining Corporation, and the Pan mine became Calibre’s first operating mine in the United States, joining the company’s operations portfolio with mines in Nicaragua. According to Mr. Andy Britton, Vice President of Operations for Calibre, US, “The mine includes leach pads, electrical power supply and distribution, access roads, security fences and gates, water supply and storage, office buildings, assay laboratory, single-stage ore crushing system and mineral processing facilities, but our most important assets are our employees.” The Pan Mine employs over 60 people, the majority of whom are Ely locals, in a range of positions including process operators, metallurgists, lab techs, engineers, process maintenance technicians, and geologists.
Calibre understands the close-knit quality of the White Pine County community, and has established roots with a main office in Downtown Ely. In addition to opening their new headquarters and being a large employer of locals, Calibre also partners with local non-profit organizations to lend resources and financial support when able.
