Great Basin Transmission, LLC

Great Basin Transmission, LLC

Activity description

Great Basin Transmission’s Southwest Intertie Project-North (SWIP-North) will provide a bi-directional transmission pathway for delivering energy between the Desert Southwest and the Pacific Northwest to meet changing market needs and to increase reliability.

SWIP-North is the final link of a transmission corridor extending between Idaho and southern Nevada that will increase reliability and reduce congestion in the western United States, and enable the bi-directional flow of more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity.

In 2023, Great Basin Transmission was selected by CAISO’s Board of Governors to develop, permit, finance, construct, own, operate, and maintain the SWIP-North Project.

In 2024, Great Basin Transmission was selected to receive a capacity contract by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Transmission Facilitation Program and CAISO provided its final approval of SWIP-North.

In 2025, Idaho Power entered into agreement with Great Basin Transmission to secure capacity, subject to certain regulatory approvals.

By 2028, Great Basin Transmission plans to add a new 500 kV transmission line that will connect the Midpoint Substation near Twin Falls, Idaho, to the Robinson Summit Substation near Ely, Nevada.
